"Ireland's first ever 24-hour race will take place at the Mary Peters Track. An athletics event with a difference will take place at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast on 6/7 August. The Energia Belfast 24-Hour Race will be the first event of its kind to be staged on Irish soil.
The format for the race is precisely as the title describes with competitors running for a full day.
Those set to compete include Fermanagh man and Irish record holder Thomas Maguire who set his Irish mark of 155 miles for the 24-hours last November.
That time was achieved as he won the Monaco 24-Hour race and his curriculum vitae also includes an Ultra Marathon win in the Namibian desert as well as competing in the North Pole
Race.
"Maguire set that record on the road, but Eoin Keith's (Irish) track record of 147 miles is sure to come under threat from the Fermanagh man," says Belfast race director Ed Smith.
Madrid-based Eddie Gallen is returning home to his native Belfast to compete.
"Every new Ultra tests me but this takes it to a different level"
Ballymoney man Harry McCloy
He has taken part in an incredible 18 24-hour races and his best performance came in May at the World 24-hour Championships where he covered a distance of 140 miles.
Smith added:"I asked Eddie if he needed anything. 'Just a little table beside the track to put my stuff on' came the reply because he intends running for the entire 24 hours - stopping only for toilet breaks."
Irish-based Frenchman Sebastien Locteau has also filed an entry for the race. Two years ago Locteau was confined to a wheelchair because of a back injury but he's recovered sufficiently to be on the start-line for next month's event.
Ballymena will be represented by three runners - Jim Moore, Robin Alexander and Jonathan McCloy, who is raising money for a prostate cancer charity.
Ballymoney man Harry McCloy will also be in the field and is aiming to raise £3,000 for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children."Every new Ultra tests me but this takes it to a different level. It will be interesting," says Harry, matter-of-factly.
Cookstown man Rob Davison, Donemana-based Graeme Colhoun and Dungannon's Keith Clarke are also set to compete and Ed Smith is holding out hope that a few women hopefuls will opt to take the plunge in this most unusual of events.Medical staff will be present at the event which will start on the Friday evening and continue through the night and into the Saturday evening finish."
